AMBALAVAYAL

Ambalavayal is a notable tourist destination situated in the Wayanad district, approximately 10 kilometers from Sulthan Bathery. A key highlight for visitors to Ambalavayal is the Ambalavayal Heritage Museum, an archaeological facility that showcases an extensive collection of artifacts and antiques dating back to the 2nd Century AD. The village is also enriched by numerous attractions, including Phantom Rock, Elephant Rock, and scenic viewpoints such as Manjappara, Kaduvakkuzhi, Cheengery Mala, and the Karappuzha Dam, all of which enhance the area's appeal to tourists.

The Ambalavayal Heritage Museum, one of the largest archaeological museums in Kerala, is celebrated for its extensive collection of artifacts that illuminate the history of Wayanad. Numerous excavation projects have taken place in and around Wayanad, and the artifacts uncovered are now housed in the museum. These items serve as a testament to a vibrant tradition and culture that has existed in Wayanad for thousands of years

2.PHANTOM ROCK

The phantom rock is a natural rock formation at the top of the hills.This structure resembles a human head, which is the origin of its name. Visitors can drive to the top, where there is ample parking available.

3. EDAKKAL CAVES

Edakkal caves, located in the Ambukuthi hills, are approximately 10 kilometers from Sulthan Bathery in the Wayanad district. These caves are regarded as one of the earliest sites of human settlement. Visiting Edakkal caves feels like stepping back into a long-lost era. They have offered historians valuable insights into the lifestyles and customs of our forebears. The caves consist of two natural rock formations, thought to have been created by a significant fissure in a massive boulder. The carvings within are remarkably intricate. To access these caves, one must trek up the impressive Ambukuthi hills.

6. CHEENGERI HILLS

Cheengeri Mala, also known as Cheengeri Hills, is situated along the route to Kaduvakuzhi from Sultan Bathery. It is famous for being easy to climb, as it lacks the dense forests that cover many other hills in Wayanad and features a gentle incline. One of the most striking aspects of this hill is the breathtaking view it provides in the early morning hours.

7. POOPOLI (RARS AMBALAVAYAL)

This lively event occurs every year in Wayanad, Kerala, India, during January, signaling the start of the new year. Regarded as the largest flower exhibition in Kerala, it features breathtaking floral displays, with numerous stalls showcasing a variety of flowers, gardens, and agricultural innovations. The festival also includes enjoyable activities such as adventure sports and a range of tasty food options. "Poopoli" can also denote the venue of the flower show, located at the Regional Agricultural Research Station of Kerala Agricultural University in Ambalavayal.

8. KADUVAKUZHI

Kaduva Kuzhi is a cave located close to Edakkal Cave, which is one of the most well-known tourist spots in the Wayanad district. Despite its proximity, Kaduva Kuzhi has not yet gained popularity among visitors, and many tourists overlook it while exploring Wayanad. It is believed that leopards, referred to as kaduva, would seek refuge in this cave during the sweltering summer heat, which is how it got its name, ‘Kaduva Kuzhi’. The cave stretches approximately 800 feet and winds in various directions.

9.NELLARCHAL

If you reach Nellarachal in the evening, you will see Sandhya blooming.  In the distance, red begins to spread over the western mountains.  The sun, which was blazing until then, will slowly cool down and turn red.  Golden threads will begin to scatter.  Nellarachal has a beauty like no other in the evening when the golden rays are shining.

10. HANUMAN HILL

One of the best place near Ambalavayal to visit in the morning hours. It's an offroad so a bike or jeep is suggested. These hills gives you a beautiful view and awesome trucking experience.

SULTHAN BATHERY

Originally known as ‘Ganpathivattom,’ Sulthan Bathery received its current name in the 18th century. Tipu Sultan took over the local Jain temple and repurposed it as an ammunition depot or battery. Located along the Kozhikode-Kollegal highway, Sulthan Bathery is the largest town in the Wayanad district. This charming town sits at an elevation of 1,000 meters above sea level. A visit here promises an enjoyable and exciting experience, especially with the intriguing caves nearby. These caves, adorned with ancient drawings, trace back to the Neolithic period. Adventure enthusiasts particularly favor this destination. The lush green mountains offer a thrilling challenge for trekking and hiking.

11. JAIN TEMPLE

The Jain Temple at Sultan Bathery is believed to have been built in 13th century AD. The temple has an interesting history. It first served as a shrine, and then became an important center of commercial activity. Later in 18th century, it became a dumping ground of ammunitions by Tipu Sultan. The architecture of the temple has strong influences of the then Vijayanagar architectural style. It was built with large granite pillars that are extensively carved. The pillars have various designs such as sarpabandha, floral designs, Thirthankara, Goose, etc.

12. ASSUMPTION FORANE CHURCH

The church features a beautiful and roomy interior, earning accolades for its contemporary design and cleanliness. Its tranquil atmosphere makes it a preferred venue for events such as weddings providing a calm setting free from interruptions. With parking available in the basement, visitors can enjoy a convenient experience. Numerous guests share their appreciation for the church's spiritual vibe and visual charm, making it a popular destination for both residents and visitors. Its prime location, architectural elegance, and spiritual importance enhance its reputation as a significant attraction in the area.

13.MUTHANGA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary boasts a diverse array of plant and animal life. This sanctuary links Karnataka and Tamil Nadu via the Bandipur and Madumalai parks. Visitors may encounter herds of elephants, bison, deer, peacocks, monkeys, tigers, leopards, bears, reptiles, butterflies, rare birds, and medicinal plants. Notably, Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary ranks as the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala and is recognized as one of the most biologically rich areas in peninsular India

14. KURUVA ISLAND

Kuruva Islands, or Kuruva Dweep, is popular among tourists for its calm and serene surroundings. Spanning 950 acres, it takes a minimum of 3 hours to explore this uninhabited island, located in the middle of the Kabani River. The island is home to a vast array of rare flora and fauna, and features bamboo walkways and bridges that help traverse the jungle and streams, especially during the rainy season. Its dense forests provide shelter for butterflies and birds, making it an ideal spot for bird watchers.

15. PAZHASSI RAJA MUSEUM

The Pazhassi Raja Tomb is built in memory of King Veera Pazhassi Raja, a warrior prince from the kingdom of Kottayam who earned the title Kerala Simham (King of Kerala) for his bravery and rebellion against the British. This memorial tomb is constructed at the site where he was cremated. Nearby, a museum showcases the king's prized possessions and provides a glimpse into the local heritage and culture.

16. THOVARIMALA

Thovarimala Is located 5 km from Sulthan Bathery, and visitors can trek 400 meters (1,312 ft) to reach Thovarimala Ezhuthupara, where they can see Stone Age pictorial writings on a rock wall created by ancient people. This site is a must-visit for history lovers. Additionally, this hill is one of the most ecologically fragile regions of Wayanad, supporting a diverse range of species and serving as the backbone of the area. It is also believed that Maha Rishi Manu, the spiritual son of Brahma, did penance here.

17. PAKSHIPATHALAM

Pakshipathalam is known as the abode of birds, with an astounding number of bird species making it a hotspot for nature lovers and professional bird watchers. The deep-seated caves at the northern end of Pakshipathalam are well-known for their remarkable biodiversity.

18. THIRUNELLI TEMPLE

Near the mesmerizing Brahmagiri hills in Wayanad in Kerala is situated an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This Mahavishnu temple, also known as ''Sahyamala Kshetram'' and ''Kashi of the South'', is one of the major destinations for pilgrims across South India. It houses a stone aqueduct that ensures uninterrupted water supply to the temple from the forests. Its channels are supported by pillars with interesting murals carved on them. Even today, cold mountain water gushes out of these channels. A cave temple called Gunnika dedicated to Lord Shiva is also present near the main temple complex.

KALPETTA

Kalpetta, a small town on the Kozhikode-Mysore National Highway, is the headquarters of Wayanad district, located about 72 km from Kozhikode. Surrounded by coffee plantations and mountains, it serves as both a tourist hub and a major trading center in the district, where spices, coffee, and tea produced in the Wayanad mountains are traded to various regions of India. Kalpetta is also a stronghold of the Jains, with around 500 Jain families residing here and several temples and institutions run by them. Additionally, Kalpetta offers many attractions nearby, including waterfalls, dams, and other natural wonders.

19.  LAKKIDI VIEW POINT

Lakkidi View Point,  is situated along the Calicut-Wayanad-Mysore route. The view from the viewpoint is breathtaking; on some mornings, it can be foggy and cloudy, creating a stunning atmosphere. The sunset here is equally amazing.

20. POOKODE LAKE

Pookode Lake, a perennial freshwater lake near Lakkidi in Wayanad district, is surrounded by lush evergreen forest and resembles the shape of India’s physical map. This major tourist hotspot offers attractions such as kayaking and boating facilities, a freshwater aquarium, a children’s park, and a handicrafts and spices emporium.

21. EN OORU

En Ooru is a tribal heritage village located at Pookode in Wayanad district, showcasing the vibrant culture and traditions of the state’s tribal communities. This cluster of traditional tribal huts, roofed with hay and set against the backdrop of towering hills, has become a major tourist attraction in the region. Spread over 25 acres on a hillock, the center offers a golden opportunity to learn about the heritage and lifestyle of the tribespeople.

23. BANASURA DAM

The Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia, is located at Padinjarethara near Kalpetta in Wayanad. This ideal spot for boating and trekking also features a garden, making it one of the most popular picnic locations in the district, with a variety of boating options available. Trekking enthusiasts can discover several hidden trails that lead to breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.

24. KOODALKADAVU

 Koodalkadavu is a small hamlet located in the scenic district of Wayanad in Kerala, India. Situated near Palvelicham village and Kuruvadweep island, Koodalkadavu features the Koodal Kadavu Check Dam, built across the Banasura Sagar River, one of the largest earthen dams in India. This dam provides water for irrigation and drinking purposes while also offering a picturesque view of the surrounding hills and forests.

25. KARLAD LAKE

Karlad Lake,located in Wayanad district, is the second largest freshwater lake in Kerala. Situated about 3 km from Banasura Sagar Dam, the lake offers a variety of adventure activities, including boating, kayaking, ziplining, rock climbing, nature walks, and bamboo rafting. The star attraction here is the zip line, which is set up on a 50 m tower and spans 250 m across the lake.

26. KURUMBALAKOTTA

Kurumbalakotta is a monolith hillock located in Wayanad district, Kerala, India. Situated at 3,220 feet above sea level, the hill offers a splendid view of the surrounding scenery. Geographically, it is part of the Deccan plateau and lies in the center of Wayanad, making it one of the best places in Wayanad to witness the sunrise.

28. SOOCHIPARA WATERFALLS

Sentinel Rock, popularly known as Soochipara Waterfalls, is located near Kalpetta in Wayanad district. This waterfall, situated inside a dense forest teeming with birds, features a white stream cascading headfirst onto sharp granite rocks.

This hill is one of the most ecologically fragile regions of Wayanad, supporting a large variety of species and serving as the backbone of the area. Maha Rishi Manu, the spiritual son of Brahma, is said to have done penance here. The foothills of the mountain are protected by several temples and surrounded by mythical histories.

30.CHEMBRA HILL

Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad district and lives up to its reputation as a picturesque location, with the route to the peak passing by waterfalls and lush greenery. Over the years, Chembra has maintained its pristine nature, allowing many exotic species of rare flora and fauna to thrive. It is a prime spot for trekking, and guided tours are available and necessary for making the climb.

29. MANIKUNNU HILL

Kanthanpara Waterfalls is situated about 22 km from Kalpetta in Wayanad district. This quaint little waterfall is known for its secluded and serene vibe, surrounded by beautiful greenery on all sides. It is a perfect spot to spend a day on a picnic, enjoying the calming embrace of nature.

32. MEENMUTTY WATERFALLS

A 2km jungle trek leads to Meenmutty Waterfalls, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in Wayanad. A unique feature of Meenmutty Waterfalls is that the water cascades from a height of nearly 1,000 feet over three stages, creating a stunning triple-decker effect.
