Malabar tamarind, a pumpkin-looking fruit that is popularly known as kudampuli or puli in Malayalam and Tamil, is the trendy cousin of mangosteen. The tree is popularly found across India and grows in almost every backyard in Kerala.
The fruit is known as kudampuli in Malayalam language and it is traditionally used as a souring agent in the preparation of some curries. Many traditional recipes use the fruit’s extract and rind due to the sour flavor that it lends to the food.
